João Zilhão (1957- )

A investigação deste arqueólogo tem incidido sobre temas relacionados com as origens da agricultura na Europa mediterrânica e tem estado centrada no problema da extinção dos Neandertais.

Saturado com a pequenhez e as frustações do meio arqueológico português, João Zilhão foi trabalhar para a Universidade de Bristol, no Reino Unido. Presentemente, está activo no Departmento de Arqueologia e Antropologia. www.bris.ac.uk/archanth/staff/zilhao/

É professor do Departamento de Arqueologia da Universidade de Bristol, e professor auxiliar do Instituto de Arqueologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa

João Zilhão é doutorado em Arqueologia pré-histórica pela Universidade de Lisboa (onde leccionou desde 1984), com uma dissertação sobre o Paleolítico Superior em Portugal defendida em Novembro de 1995.

Em Janeiro de 1996 foi designado responsável pelo projecto de criação do Parque Arqueológico do Vale do Côa, que dirigiu até Maio de 1997. Nessa data foi nomeado director do então criado Instituto Português de Arqueologia (IPA), a Direcção-geral do Ministério da Cultura que superintende a actividade arqueológica em Portugal.

A sua investigação tem incidido sobre temas relacionados com as origens da agricultura na Europa mediterrânica e, ultimamente, tem estado centrada no problema da extinção dos Neandertais.

Dirigiu trabalhos de escavação na rede cársica da nascente do Almonda, com ocupação paleolítica contínua desde cerca de 300.000 BP, e no abrigo do Lagar Velho (Lapedo, Leiria), com ocupação do Paleolítico Superior inicial.

É membro dos Conselhos Permanentes da Union Internationale des Sciences Pré et Proto-Historiques e da International Association for the Study of Human Palaeontology, académico correspondente da Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona e membro do Deutsches Archäologisches Institut de Berlim.

Pertence às Comissões de Redacção das revistas Paleo (editor: Musée National de Préhistoire, Les Eyzies, França) e Journal of Archaeological Research (editor: Plenum Publishing Company, Nova Iorque, Estados Unidos).
